Our school council at Raglan Infant School meet every other Tuesday at 9am. At the moment we have only year 2 members on it but year 1 are holding elections to vote new councillors on. There is 1 boy and 1 girl representing each class and they are elected by the class, doing a secret ballot.
We have a chairperson and a vice chairperson to run our meetings and our secretary writes the minutes. We give ideas and opinions and discuss things that children are bothered about, such as looking after the playground equipment and behaviour in the school. We also judge some competitions such as Noah’s Ark drawing competition. We have had visits from Councillor Vince, who wanted our opinions on what parks should be like and what we liked doing outside school.
We also worked with Cat and Ceri, the creative partnership people. We do corridor duty once a week and we feel that it is important to ask children to walk nicely.
We enjoy being school councillors because we represent our school. We are friendly and we always help other children. We also have lots of fun. We like having a biscuit at our meeting! We work well as a team and we listen to each other.
Last year the year 2’s councillors visited the Mayor’s Parlour at the Civic Centre and we hope that we are going to be able to go early next year as well.
Thank you for reading this.
