Raglan Infant School

History of Raglan Infant School

Reception Class 1951In 1928 Raglan School was opened in Bush Hill Park and admitted 38 children into the Infant department. At that time the school catered for children up to the age of 14.

Later, in 1934 an extension to the Junior building was started and in 1935 the Infant school was opened as a separate school. Over the years numbers grew and it is recorded in the school log that there were 442 children attending in 1937.

At the start of the 2nd World War children and staff were evacuated to Norfolk in 1939 and Newport in 1940. The school log goes on to say that over a 4 week period in 1944 there were 60 air raid alerts.

Staff Photo 1978The children and staff spent much of their time during this period in the air raid shelter!
