the governing body

Who can become a Governor?

Anyone can be a governor with a few exceptions on health grounds, age or if they do not reach other legal criteria.

Who are the Governors?

spiral bound booksSome of our governors are parents (Parent Governors). They are elected by parents and must be a parent of a child in the school at the time of their election but can continue after their child has left.

Some are teachers elected by their fellow teachers and a non teaching member of staff can also be elected by the non teachers, this group of governors are known as (Staff Governors) which also includes the Head Teacher.

Some are members of the local community, (Community Governors), who volunteer to be governors and are selected through interview by the members of the governing body. There are also (LEA Governors) who are placed on Governing Body by the Local Authority.

All governors serve a four year term but can leave before or put themselves forward for re-election at the end of their term if they so choose. A list of all the current members and their roles/responsibilities can be seen bellow.

All governors are linked to an individual area of the curriculum and visit the school to monitor their areas.

What do Governors do?

Help the school maintain its high standards. They make decisions on school policy, have responsibility for Performance Management of the Head, the financial management of the school and Health and Safety. They do not have responsibility for the day to day running of the school. That is the responsibility of the Head Teacher.

The full Governing Body meets termly. They approve the budget set by the Resources Committee, review the decisions of the committees and to follow up on actions referred to individuals or sent by committee.

Resources Committee meets termly, to review issues on Health and Safety, the buildings and equipment. They set the budget annually and monitor the financial spending termly.

Curriculum and Staffing Committee meets termly. It makes decisions about what our children are taught and reviews the staffing issues in the school.

Panels meet as required, they range from the appointment of the Head and Deputy, staff pay, staff grievance, capability, to discipline redundancy and performance management. They could also meet to deal with pupil discipline, complaints against the school and the curriculum.

Governor Training governors are able to receive training from the local authority and other providers to enable them to fulfil their roles effectively.
